Canada’s Top-Rated Nail Salons
Searching for the best nail salon near you can feel overwhelming when every salon promises flawless nails…
Is $40 a lot for a gel manicure in Canada? Generally, no. A $40 CAD gel or Shellac manicure is within the advertised price range at many Canadian nail salons. The important question is what the appointment includes. A simple gel colour change, a full manicure with cuticle care, and a set of sculpted gel extensions are different services with different prices.
Here is a practical 2026 price guide based on examples of publicly advertised Canadian salon menus—not a regulated fee schedule or a guaranteed national average. Prices change by city, technician, nail length and service.
| Service | Indicative advertised price (CAD) | What you are paying for |
|---|---|---|
| Basic manicure with regular lacquer | $22–$40 | Nail shaping and care, with air-drying polish |
| Gel or Shellac manicure | $38–$65 | Natural-nail manicure finished with lamp-cured colour |
| Builder gel or structured overlay | About $55–$80 | Additional structure over the natural nail; scope varies |
| Soft gel or Gel-X extensions | About $75–$90 | Length added with full-cover soft gel tips |
| Bio gel full set | About $70–$85 | Full enhancement service, not just a colour coat |
| Gel polish removal, when charged separately | About $10–$20 | Removing an existing set before changing or finishing |
These are illustrative ranges, not a single national market average. The gel-manicure and removal examples are consistent with reported advertised menus from nine Canadian cities in 2026; enhancement ranges draw on a smaller set of publicly posted menus across several provinces. Ask the salon to confirm the current price and inclusions. See 2026 manicure menu comparisons and gel enhancement price samples.
$40 is a reasonable advertised starting price for a basic gel manicure in many Canadian markets. As one real Toronto example, Vanity Nail & Beauty Bar’s posted service menu lists a Shellac manicure at $40 and describes shaping, cuticle care, polish, massage and a hot towel. That is one salon’s price, not proof that every salon provides the same inclusions.
However, if a salon charges $40 for a quick polish change only, with no nail preparation or manicure, compare it with local alternatives. Conversely, $40 for a carefully performed full gel manicure may be good value. Quality, hygiene, technician skill and removal technique matter more than a difference of a few dollars.
Remember tax and tip. A posted $40 service often does not include sales tax or an optional gratuity. In Ontario, 13% HST would make the service $45.20 before any tip, provided the quoted price is before tax. Other provinces have different tax rules.
This is usually colour applied to your natural nails and cured under a compatible lamp. Shellac is CND’s branded system, although some menus use the word loosely for gel polish. The service does not necessarily include length or strengthening structure.
An overlay adds a layer of gel to create structure around your natural nail. It may take additional preparation, shaping and maintenance, so a structured manicure typically costs more than gel colour alone.
These services add length using shaped full-cover tips bonded with a compatible system. Tip selection, fitting, length, finishing and safe removal affect labour and cost. Do not confuse this service with a basic gel colour manicure.
These enhancement services are often priced above a basic manicure because they build strength or length and require shaping. Salons use different labels, so ask which product will be used and how it is removed.
Check recent portfolio photos for consistency, ask about cleaning practices, and make sure the salon offers the service you actually want. An inexpensive appointment that damages natural nails during preparation or removal is not a bargain. A more expensive menu is not automatically better, either.

A natural-nail gel or Shellac manicure is frequently advertised in the roughly $38–$65 range in sampled Canadian menus. Structured overlays and extension sets generally cost more. Confirm the salon’s definition of “gel nails.”
Not usually for a complete gel manicure. It would generally be unusually low for a full set of long sculpted gel extensions, so double-check what is included.
Many clients plan maintenance after around two to three weeks, depending on natural nail growth, application and lifestyle. Do not peel off lifting gel; have it removed appropriately.
Tipping is optional and based on the service and your preference. Ask whether posted prices already include taxes or service charges, particularly when comparing salons.
